SPRINGHILL: Beginning the hockey season with two strikes against your team could make for a long, tough hockey season but that's not the way it was for the Cumberland PeeWee A Cougars this year.
Not only was it the first year for a PeeWee girls program in Cumberland County but, also, the Cougars team consisted of eight Atom players and only 6 PeeWee players.
With those two hurdles to overcome they still managed to finish first in the South East Female Hockey League in New Brunswick.
The reason for their success is simple - Hard work.
"The kids on this team were so dedicated," Coach Steve Skidmore said. "They showed a great love for the game; and the parents were very dedicated as well."
All the coaches said, "It's been a privilege to be a part of the team."
The girls had a very busy year.
Besides their regular league games, they practiced every Wednesday night in Springhill, they played in three tournaments, one of which had 80 female teams, and they played with great success against teams from Brookfield, Pictou and Antigonish.
And their season's not over just yet.
They will be participating in Female Showcase tournament on April 13 - 14, in Coal Harbour.
Like many teams in the Cumberland system they chose to play in the New Brunswick League to keep travel time to a minimum.
Cumberland County has a Bantam and Midget program for girls but not until this season did Cumberland have a PeeWee team.
