Hoeg getting chance to skate with the stars

SPRINGHILL - Connor Hoeg can't wait to get the chance to stop Sidney Crosby on a breakaway.

The 10-year-old Southampton native is about to have the thrill of a lifetime when he joins 11 other Canadian minor hockey players at the 2008 NHL all-star game in Atlanta as part of the McDonald's In the Line Up contest.

"When my mom told me I couldn't believe it. I thought she was joking," Hoeg said as he prepared to practice with his teammates on the Cumberland County Amherst Fire Department Atom Ramblers. "I'm so excited. I can't wait to go."

Hoeg's name was randomly selected from more than 10,000 entrants. His name was entered in the contest by his father, Matt, and now he will get the opportunity to step onto the ice with the all-stars during the opening ceremonies.

Wearing full equipment and an official NHL all-star uniform, Hoeg will also stand with the starting lineup during the playing of the national anthems. He will also get to see the Stanley Cup, meet some of the all-stars and participate in a skills clinic.

"I'm hoping to meet Sidney Crosby. I hope I get to stop him on a breakaway," said Hoeg, a goalie who idolizes Vancouver's Roberto Luongo. "I also want to meet Alexander Ovechkin. I want to get lots of autographs."

His mother, Crystal, said the Grade 4 student at Parrsboro Elementary is still on cloud nine and has been busy telling all his friends that he's going to Atlanta.

His father is so happy for his son and feels he's getting a chance few others will ever experience.

"It's something you can't put a price on, the chance to meet all those players up close and personal," Matt said. "I'm so excited for him. I'm almost as excited as he is."

To top it off, Hoeg got a special confirmation in a phone call from Calgary Flames' defenceman Dion Phaneuf.

"I was speechless. I didn't know what to say," Hoeg said. "He said I'm going to the all-star game and he hopes to be there too."
