SPRINGHILL - Even good teams sometimes have bad games.
The East Hants Penguins scored four times with the man advantage, and once shorthanded, en route to a 6-1 win over the Cumberland County Cool Blues in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League action at the Richard Calder Arena on Friday.
"It was just one of those games," Blues' coach Ron Reynolds said. "We were on a seven-game winning streak and we had beaten them 9-1 before. I just don't think the boys were prepared and they made us pay for it."
Kyle Ross and newly-acquired Brett Woodland gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead midway through the second period before Ryan Smith scored to put the Blues on the board with Cody Roach and Seth Crowe adding assists.
Trevor MacKenzie, shorthanded, and Shane Avery scored before the period ended and Jonathan McArthur and Randy Gilbert added third period power play goals to round out the scoring.
"We took some costly penalties and lost some of our discipline. That was the difference through the last part of the game," Reynolds said.
The Blues return to action on Friday when they host the Sackville Blazers at 7:30 p.m. at the Richard Calder Arena.
"It's tough to take a loss like that, especially since things were rolling, but the boys will learn from that and better prepare themselves from here on out," Reynolds said.
East Hants outshot the Blues 32-26 with both Matt Kimber and Landon Crowe seeing duty between the pipes.
Despite the loss, Reynolds remains upbeat saying he's happy with his club's overall performance through the first two months of the season. Still, as teams like East Hants improve themselves through trades, it will be important for his players to be ready for the challenge.
"I can't see us making that many moves. We're already pretty deep," he said. "We're 12-3 with the best winning percentage in the league so we must be doing something right. If we do make changes it will more to tweak than to change for the sake of changing."
