Peewee Ramblers lose to Pictou County
Parrell's OT goal lifts Midget Ramblers to Bluenose title
SPRINGHILL - Travis Parrell scored off a rebound 8:48 into the second overtime period as the Cumberland County D.W. Thompson Esso-Scotsburn Dairy Ramblers defeated the TASA Ducks 4-3 in Midget Minor AAA championship action at the 42nd Annual Carter's Sports Cresting Bluenose Minor Hockey Tournament here Sunday.
"It's not something I ever could have dreamed about," Parrell said moments after he buried a rebound off a Jordie Shaw shot. "It's amazing."
Cole Wood, Jesse Colborne and Travis LeBlanc scored for the Ramblers, who trailed 1-0 after one period and led 2-1 after two. They appeared headed for the championship with a 3-2 lead late until Theron Lane scored to force overtime with less than six minutes to play.
Bobbie MacNair and Scott Webbiak also scored for the Ducks. Parrell, Nick Jackson, Cody Sutton and Aaron Ferguson each added assists.
Nathan Kelly of the Ramblers was top goalie, Parrell was top scorer and Brendan Grimes was most sportsmanlike player.
Pictou County, TASA and South East Moncton also won titles during the opening weekend of the tournament that resumes with action in several A divisions and midget AA later this week.
In peewee AA, the Anchor Motors Pipers of Pictou County overcame a 2-0 first period deficit to defeat the host Cumberland County Jungle Jim's Ramblers.
Cody Johnston scored the winner midway through the third period and Brett Connors salted the win with his second goal of the game into an empty net.
Luke Swanwick had a goal and an assist for Pictou County while Ryan Camp also scored. Benjamin Morrissey, Luke Turnbull, Alex Doyle and Dylan Johnstone added assists.
Lukas MacDonald of Pictou County was the tourney's top goalie while Brett Connors won top scorer honours. Travis Merritt of Cumberland County was top defenceman with Ryan Hunter earning most sportsmanlike player honours.
Josh Pugsley had a goal and an assist for Cumberland County with Jerico MacPhee and Ryan Hunter also scoring. Chris Baxter had two assists and Mallory Rushton and Tyler Landry each had one.
TASA of St. Margaret's Bay won the atom AAA division with a 7-4 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs while South East Moncton defeated West Kent, N.B. 2-0 to win the midget girls division.
