Host Miramichi tonight
Ramblers split games at Showcase
MONCTON - The Amherst Ramblers continued their hot play over the weekend splitting action at the second MJAHL Showcase Weekend at the J. Louis Levesque Arena in Moncton.
Matthew Squires scored the winner in a shootout as the Ramblers nipped the Moncton Beavers 2-1.
"It was a great weekend. We had a great second and third period against a good Miramichi team and bounced back with a solid effort against Moncton," Rambler coach Corey Crocker said.
The Ramblers host the Miramichi Timberwolves tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the stadium.
The win Sunday came 24 hours after the Ramblers were dropped 3-1 by the Timberwolves in the Showcase opener.
Against Moncton, Chuckie Schenbri scored in the first period period to give the host Beavers an early lead before Jason Power scored for the Ramblers in the second period to tie the score with Adam Chipman adding the lone assist.
On Saturday, the Ramblers looked sluggish at times in their loss to Miramichi, their first setback in four games.
"It was a busy weekend and we've been going hard with our fitness. There are just going to some games when we struggle because of fitness," Crocker said. "Our fitness is going to pay off in January and February."
Carl Hayes, Daniel Basque on the power play, and Scott Estey scored for the Timberwolves, who play in Amherst on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Andrew Oakley scored the lone Rambler goal on the power play at 3:45 of the second period from Squires and Travis Turner.
Rambler goalie Andrew Flemming was solid throughout the weekend earning second star honours in both games, turning aside 40 shots against Miramichi and 31 against Moncton.
The Ramblers also play in Antigonish on Friday before hosting Halifax on Saturday.
