SPRINGHILL Shane Avery and Trevor MacKenzie scored twice each leading the East Hants Penguins to a 6-2 victory over the Cumberland County Cool Blues in Nova Scotia Junior B Hockey league exhibition action here Sunday.
The first three goals of the game for the Penguins all came shorthanded including the eventual game winner by Elijah Fralick at 11:12 of the second period.
Randy LeBlanc netted the other goal for East Hants.
Cody Roach scored for the Blues at 16:14 of the middle frame and Cody Jones scored at 3:18 of the third period.
Matt Kimber made 25 of 31 saves making his first start in goal for the Blues and Fraser Bailey stopped 14 of 16 shots he faced.
We talked to Matt and he knew what kind of lineup we were going to have in front of him, Ron Reynolds, coach and GM of the Blues said.
He played well considering the amount of quality shots he faced, he added.
The defeat was the first in exhibition play for the Blues, but not a factor the coaching staff is worried about. Their goal heading into the weekend was to look at players, gauge who would work in their systems and compete for the final positions on the club.
At present the team has 14-forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders following the trimming of the roster by five players Sunday.
We sent Kody Sutton and Jordie Shaw back to midget as we felt they would benefit from most ice time at that level for this season, he said.
We still have Shayne OByrne in camp and we want to take a little longer look at him before we make a decision there, he added.
In addition, Reynolds hopes to shore up a few areas of concern this week including players being grittier and battling more in all zones.
Our defensive zone coverage wasnt what it should be either and well work on that in practice, he added.
The Blues will make a return trip to East Hants on Thursday night for a 7:30 p.m. game.
