AMHERST  The calendar may say July, but planning is already well underway for a this years Fundy Hockey School at the Amherst Stadium.

When participants take to the ice at the 24th edition of the school in September, theyll notice a few changes.

The hockey school will continue to be about developing individual skills, but were going to introduce some more fun elements to it to make it more enjoyable, Jamie Matthews said.

Matthews, a former star with the Amherst Ramblers and Sudbury Wolves of the OHL and NHL draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks, has taken over the hockey schools reigns from David Crocker.

The hockey school will begin on Saturady, Sept. 15 and continue until Tuesday, Oct. 2. Participants each get 12 sessions of ice time while goalies receive a couple of extra sessions.

For $150 its really a pretty good deal when you compare it to the cost of other hockey schools, Matthews said.

A longtime minor hockey coach, Matthews has seen other hockey schools across the region and is looking to implement some of the programs offered elsewhere. Mostly, though, he wants those taking part to have a fun experience that will help them prepare for the hockey season and enjoy the national game.

Most of the schools instructors are coming back this season including Tony Robichaud and Robin Black while others who have confirmed their attendance include Darren Nixon, Mike MacKenzie and Tim Ackles.

One of the things Matthews plans to implement is structured instructional sessions that will meet the needs of both house league and provincial players. Therell be less standing around and more one-on-one instruction for the players. Along with that, Matthews said, therell be more mini-games so the players can work on their team skills.

School officials have also changed the age groups a little bit to better reflect minor hockeys new age limits. Group A will include players ages seven and eight while Group B will include nine and 10 year olds. Group C will be for 11 and 12-year-old players while Group D will be for players ages 13 to 15.

There are still some openings remaining in the school. For further information, contact Matthews at 661-0201, school registrar Roy Maltby at 667-9681, registrar Vince Arbing at 667-8320 or treasurer Corrine Porter at 667-9434.
