NEW?GLASGOW - A new newspaper is circling around Pictou County this morning.
Hot of the press is the Pictou Island Gazette, filled with fundraising news and entertainment items giving hints to the secrets and intrigue to come at the fourth annual Survivor Pictou Island.
Local businesses and organizations are being called upon to sign up for this year's competition as seven teams of three compete to outwit, outplay and outpledge each other in games of endurance and conspiracy.
The gazette is the first clue to this year's competition, containing details about a time capsule hidden on the island filled with memorabilia - pictures, trinkets, messages and a skeleton or two - from previous Survivor seasons. Finding the capsule, which has been secretly hidden on the beach, is the first challenge teams will face when they arrive on the island. The first team to locate it will be given an advantage or reward.
"With 17 teams previously bitten by the Survivor bug, the opportunity to sign up is time sensitive. If the last decade passed you by, why not enter your team in 2010 and have the opportunity to make island history by taking the 2009 title from the Downtown Village People," says organizer Lesley Ann Sobey.
This year, the competition will hit the beach on June 18. Funds raised from the Pictou County Progress Club's event will support local organizations, including Pictou County Early Intervention, the Pictou County Help Line, Special Olympics, the Progress Club and other local charities the club supports.
The winner will be announced following the final competition, which will travel from Pictou Island to the Frog and Toad in New Glasgow at 5:30 p.m. In addition to the final competition, the teams will participate in tribal council as they rival for the coveted title.
"The post-event party is a great way to celebrate with the castaways, volunteers, charities and members of Progress Club," says Judith MacLellan. "It's a must-see event."
