Budding baker serving up goodies to help earthquake-torn coun

AMHERST - Amherst's Kristy Brown is busy making cupcakes as a fundraiser for Haitian relief efforts.

"I was visiting my sister in Florida the weekend before last, and while I was there it was all that was on the news. It was devastating to watch as people had no idea if their loved ones were dead or alive. I knew I had to do something to help," Brown said.
In the process of opening her own bakery, Smashing Cupcakes, Brown thought she would put her talents to use and do a cupcake fundraiser.
With 250 (averaging 10 cupcakes per order) orders to date, Brown said she hadn't expected to get that many orders.
"I thought I would have friends and family place orders and that would be it," the baker said.
The cupcakes are $2 each, and come in vanilla or chocolate with vanilla buttercream frosting.
"I decided to donate the money through the Humanitarian Coalition because for every dollar donated, the Canadian government will match it," Brown said.
The cupcakes will be made Tuesday through Thursday. Brown can be reached at 661-2150 or through her Facebook group Smashing Cupcakes to place an order.
"If this goes well, I will be making cupcakes every Wednesday to help support this cause," Brown said.
