AMHERST - Amherst residents Gary Carter and Gary Lucci won the 2009 NSGA Senior Men's 4 Ball Championship by seven strokes at the Amherst Golf Club, which hosted the tournament on Thursday and Friday.
Carter and Lucci started Friday's round 4-under par with a one-stroke lead.
The pair continued their steady play throughout the day and carded three birdies and two bogeys to finish one under for the day and five under for the tournament to capture their first NSGA Senior 4 Ball title.
"It's a team event and both of us played pretty well," said Carter. "When one guy was going bad the other guy kind of pulled you through."
Both golfers said the greens were tough.
"Playing on our home course helped a lot," said Lucci. "Especially reading the greens."
"The greens were fast and they had some tough pins," added Carter, who is the 2007 NSGA senior men's champion.
On both days they birdied the 10th hole but bogeyed hole number 11.
"The eleventh hole gave us the most trouble," said Carter. "But there's a lot of luck involved in golf."
The tournament was held at the Amherst Golf Club in conjunction with the clubs summer-long 100th Anniversary celebrations.
A total of 84 teams of two descended on the Amherst Golf Thursday to compete in the tournament.
