TRURO - Darren Doucette and his Dartmouth Moosehead Dry have been the arch enemy of the Truro Bearcats for the past 20 years.
Sometimes that rivalry has gotten heated.
But when the Bearcats learned Doucette's wife Alana had been diagnosed with breast cancer, that rivalry suddenly fell by the wayside.
After their final regular season contest against Dartmouth Tuesday at the TAAC Grounds, the Bearcats will donate the proceeds from their gate to the Dartmouth team's fundraising efforts.
"When you cross the lines onto the field it's a game," said John Chisholm, the Bearcats' treasurer who came up with the idea. "When you come back over, reality and real life sits in and everyone just wanted to help."
Game time is 7:30 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to attend and wear pink to the contest. Admission is $3. Chisholm said he hopes the event attracts a big crowd for a good cause.
"It's one of those things that everybody knows someone who has been affected by some type of cancer," he said.
Since learning of Alana's diagnosis in February, Doucette's Dry teammates have organized a pink night at a home game, sold pink Dry hats, raffled a family stay at the Holiday Inn and decided to participate in the Run for the Cure in October. The idea to help with their fundraising efforts came on a recent road trip to Kentville between Chisholm and Bearcats coach Glenn Matheson.
"We started talking about it and thought it was a great idea," Chisholm said.
The pair was met with no resistance from the club's executive and Doucette was more than happy when he received a phone call from the Bearcats.
"Everyone was for it and just said what can we do to help and when we contacted (Doucette) he thought it was great," Chisholm said.
Dartmouth (14-7) leads the five-team Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League by a game over the defending champion Halifax Canadians (13-8) while Truro is a game and a half from first at 13-9.
