Carson tied for fifth at provincial junior golf tourney

NORTH SYDNEY - Amherst's Zach Carson is in a tie for fifth place through 36 holes at the Nova Scotia Golf Association junior championships at Seaview Golf and Country Club.


Carson managed just one birdie yesterday on the par-71, 6,446-yard layout to go along with four bogeys and a double bogey en route to a 5-over 76, giving him a two-day total of 149.


Eric Locke of The Pines Resort in Digby is the leader at 143, one shot better than Ally Tidcombe of Ken-Wo - who lost in a playoff at the NSGA's men's amateur championship Sunday. Tidcombe vaulted into second place with a 68 yesterday after a 76 in the opening round.


Sam Holland of Ken Wo, who beat Tidcombe in that playoff, is tied with Truro's Eric Banks for third at 145.


Malagash's Mark Canfield, a member at Northumberland Links, moved up the leaderboard into a tie for eighth with Peter MacLaren, a Halifax resident competing out of the Parrsboro Golf Club.


MacLaren posted a 1-under 70 and Canfield a 75 to sit with 151 totals.


Bedford's Irene Jung has a commanding 13-stroke lead in the junior girls tourament. Northumberland Links' Brynn Tomie, a Bedford resident, carded an 84 yesterday for a 163 total and sits in second spot.


The top four finishers will represent the province at the Canadian championships at the Westmount Golf and Country Club in Kitchener, Ont., from Aug. 2-6.


As well, the top four boys and top four girls will travel to Cavendish, P.E.I., next week to represent the province at the CN Future Links Championships at the Eagles Glen Golf Club.
