Green fees and annual memberships at the Chinook Golf Course were increased by 10 per cent at Tuesday's Swift Current City Council meeting.

All fees, passes, rentals and range privileges were increased for 2009. Including the increases adopted for the coming year, green fees have increased 30 per cent and passes 25 per cent since 2006.

"With the proposed 10 per cent increase, the Chinook Golf Course rates remain competitive, but slightly lower than other golf courses," Director of Recreation and Parks Dean Robson stated while presenting the rate recommendation.

The increased revenues will assist in covering increased staff wages, rising fertilizer and utility costs, and the remain competitive with other courses of a similar size. The rates also help cover the unknowns heading into a new year.

"In 2007 the Chinook Golf Course, along with all provincial golf courses, enjoyed record revenues. This was due to exceptional weather, allowing an early start, huge numbers in the summer, and an extended fall golf season. Conversely, 2008 was wet in the spring and wet and cold off and on throughout the season. Due to the unpredictable weather, both revenues and expenses were lower than budget in 2008. Revenues were approximately $26,000 less then budgeted. Projected revenues for 2008 were based on the 2007 season and the approved increase in rates and fees. Weather impacts your green fee, clubhouse and restaurant revenues, as well as your operational costs. If the weather is wet, then less water, electric and related operational costs like fertilizer, chemical applications, etc., are required.

New for 2009 will be the addition of an annual cart rental. This was done in response to golfers asking for the service.

It will now cost $23 for an adult to golf nine holes and $36 to golf 18, an increase from $21 and $33. Season passes increase from $870 from $792.
