Springhill - Entering the tournament with a big target on his back that said, "Defending Champion," Springhill's Chris Legere once again vanquished all opponents who entered the ring at this year's Club Championship at the Springhill Centennial Golf Club.

"I wouldn't say I played spectacular golf, I just played consistently," Legere said.

Legere, who parred the course by shooting a 144 in the 36-hole tournament, did have one spectacular moment.

"On Saturday I came about six inches from a hole in one down on number three," Legere said. "I had a hole in one in Fredericton, but I've never had one on this course, so it would have been nice if it went in."

For most of the weekend Legere found himself in combat with Mike Ortiz.

"There's not a whole lot of difference between us," Legere said. "We were up and down on each other by a couple of shots all weekend."

Legere and Ortiz have golfed together all summer long.

"You have to give Chris a lot of credit," Ortiz said. "Whenever I put pressure on him he answered the call."

The two men were only two points apart entering the final three holes.

"I still had a chance coming into 16," Ortiz said. "But he got up and down for par and I didn't. That pretty much won the tournament for him."

Legere gives credit to Ortiz for helping him improve his game but Ortiz gives credit where credit is due.

"Chris worked really hard on his game this summer and in this tournament I saw a lot more composure than I've ever seen from him," Ortiz said. "He has the tools to be a great golfer and this weekend he showed what it takes to win."
