AMHERST - Stepping up to the tee and knocking the ball straight down the fairway is nothing new for Mike Stack of Barnes Insurance and Ken Parrell of Bordertown Pontiac-Buick-GMC.
But this year they're taking their game to a new level.
They are the major sponsors of the biggest tournament on the Amherst Golf Club's calendar - The Amherst Open.
"We really appreciate they're willing to help out," Amherst Golf Club pro Frank McShane said.
The two-day event is set for Wednesday and Thursday This year, they are accepting 180 entries.
"Normally there's 120 players from away and 60 from the Amherst area," McShane said.
Players come from far and wide, not just for the prestige of winning the tournament, but also for the prizes.
This is the first year Barnes Insurance and Bordertown Pontiac have been the major sponsors and, as such, will provide food, water and prizes for the six best gross and net scores in each division.
"These guys get approached to sponsor a lot of events," McShane added. "So for them to take on this challenge is greatly appreciated."
Stack and Parrell will both participate in the tournament and though they might not take home the top prize, they say everyone's a winner when the Amherst Open hits town.
"People come here from away and stay here and eat here," Stack said. "So it's good for the community and it's good for all the businesses in the community."
Parrell added that people come here and see the town and see the golf course, and go home and spread the word about all Amherst has to offer.
The tournament also hosts a pro division with 15 to 20 club pro golfers, including McShane and his assistant, Mike Archibald.
Last year's winner of the Amherst Open was Northumberland Golf Course superintendent John Mills.
McShane said there are several Amherst Golfers who could take the top prize in this years tournament.
"I think our club champion Mitchell Roy has a good chance, and Mark Gould and Gary Carter will be in the mix," McShane added.
With the sponsors lined up, the golfers lined up and the course in perfect condition, all that's needed is great weather. Today's long-range forecast calls for no rain.
