AMHERST - There's no better way to go out than to go out on top and that's exactly what Amherst's Jamie MacKay managed to do yesterday.
On the final leg of the McDonald's Junior Golf Tour McKay won the overall tournament title by hitting a 76 and coming in first place in yesterday's event at the Amherst Golf Club.
"I've been playing on the McDonald's Tour since I was 11 and this is the first time I won the overall title," the 18-year-old MacKay said.
"It feels pretty good to win it."
This is the last year MacKay is eligible to play on the McDonald's Junior Golf Tour.
The tour takes the young golfers to Ocean Links, Northumberlan, Parrsboro, Springhill and, finally, to Amherst.
They take the golfers' top three scores of the five stops to determine who wins the overall title.
Amherst was the only leg of the tour MacKay won.
"The competition was pretty tight," MacKay said.
Some rain had come down on the course so it was a little wet but it didn't bother MacKay.
"The course is just fantastic right now," MacKay said.
Did he bring his 'A' game to the Amherst golf club yesterday?
I hit the ball well but the putter wasn't working very well for me," MacKay said.
The 76 wasn't the best score he's ever shot in Amherst.
I best I ever shot here was a 70. I did that last year," he said.
MacKay is a graduate of Amherst Regional High School. Next year, he will attend his second year of the golf course at Holland College in P.E.I.
When asked where his golf career will take him, he said he'll take it one day at a time.
"I'll finish my second year of college and then I'll go from there," he said.
Overall first low net in several divisions went to Jamie MacKay, Nick Reid, Tyler Skinner and Erin MacIsaac. Overall low gross in several divisions went to Jamie MacKay, Brad McCormick, Tyler Porter, Bruce Tomie, Peter MacLaren and Kaitlyn Dawson.
