MONTREAL With Robert Kennedys speech finished, Gazette reporter Stash Pruszynski walked up to the podium in the crowded ballroom of the Ambassador Hotel to retrieve his tape recorder.

It was just after midnight, June 5, 1968.

Pruszynski followed the U.S. presidential hopeful as he took a shortcut through the Los Angeles hotels kitchen on the way to a news conference about his California Democratic primary victory that night. Seconds later, a swarm of Kennedy supporters were rushing out of the kitchen. Pruszynski pushed his way in to see what had happened.

Lying on the ground, his eyes still open, blood leaking from the back of his head, lay Kennedy, Pruszynski recalled in an interview this week from Warsaw, Poland, where he now lives. Kennedy had been shot. Less than 26 hours later, he would be dead.

Pruszynski didnt hear any shots. But on Thursdays 40th anniversary of Kennedy being shot, new analyses of the recording he inadvertently made that night are raising questions about how many shots were fired, and how many assassins were lurking in the Ambassador Hotel kitchen.

Known as the Pruszynski Tape, its the only known recording of the assassination.

In the interview this week, Pruszynski said there were rumours right then that there was more than one shooter. I was aware of only one person.

When he listened to his tape in 1968, Pruszynski said he heard only a few shots.

There were very clearly two or three (shots), at the most, he said.

But the latest analyses used all kinds of sophisticated instruments. Im still not persuaded that there were more (shots), but apparently they did a hell of a serious study with methods that were not available then.
