Fore...Disc golf arrives in Maritimes
AMHERST - Cumberland County has it's first ever disc golf course thanks to two local entrepreneurs who are eager to share their love of the sport with others.
Ben Smith and Zach MacDonald are the founders of Disc Golf by Design Inc., a business dedicated to the construction and revitalization of disc golf in the Maritimes.
"Disc golf is a thriving sport in other parts of Canada and the United States, there is even a professional league called the Professional Disc Golf Association," said MacDonald.
Disc golf is a game in which individual players throw a flying disc into a basket or at a target. The object of the game is to finish the course in the fewest number of throws.
MacDonald and Smith, who have both played more than 50 different courses across North America, recently hosted their first tournament at Gogan's Green, a course they established earlier this year.
The tournament was a kick-off to their Maritime Disc Golf Series, that will see a number of tournaments take place throughout the next few months at courses across the Maritimes.
"Disc golf is a great sport because you play against yourself. It's a low impact activity that is great for all ages. There aren't a lot of costs associated with it and it's a great way to revitalize green space," said MacDonald.
Gogan's Green operates on a volunteer basis. Already they have 12 regular members who meet on a Thursday evenings to play. With a donation of $25 a person is entitled to a year's membership at the 18-hole course with discs provided.
"If anyone is interested in joining us, coming out on their own or with some friends call or email ahead of time and we will fill you in on the details," said Smith.
There are a few disc golf courses in the Maritimes already, says MacDonald, but most of them are tonal courses meaning they don't use baskets. Instead they use makeshift objects, like scrap metal, which make a ringing noise when the target has been hit.
The next Maritime Disc Golf Series tournament takes place Sunday, June 22 at Beech Hill Park in Sackville, N.B. For more information contact firstname.lastname@example.org or phone Ben at 669-0764.
