You know what I mean - you spend half your day in frustration and misery, make that one shot that reinvigorates your enthusiasm, then spend the rest of the day mired in more frustration. Its a game for masochists, as my dad would say. Thats why theres Hot Shots Golf, also known by its Japanese title, Everybodys Golf. This is a title simple enough for everyone, while retaining a competitive edge that will keep hardcore gamers playing for hours. On the PlayStation 3, Sonys little golf gem is as fun and addictive as ever, whether youre unlocking new golfers and courses in the single player campaign, or playing against a friend whos either sitting on your couch (multiplayer mode) or on a couch in a different city (online mode). Playing a round will never be easier than in Hot Shots Golf. Select your clubs, aim at a spot on the fairway, and hit X to start a shot meter. When it tops up, hit X again, and hit it when it comes back to the start point. If you do this just right, your ball will fly straight and true. If you time it incorrectly, the ball will either slice or hook, depending on whether you stopped the meter on the left or right of its original point. Basically, if you can tap the same button three times, you can play this title - which really means anyone in your family can join you for a round. You can play with up to four players at a time in offline mode, and in online, that jumps up to either eight in a single round or up to 50 in a tournament. The characters in the title all have a cartoony take to them and are conventional stereotypes for the most part (the female action star, the jetsetting playboy, the corporate slave, etc.), each with a different set of attributes. Although youll want to try out an assortment of characters, you are rewarded for your loyalty to any one, allowing you to unlock more outfits or abilities for them. But heres my one beef, and I think everyone who plays golf games does it when you begin a round horribly - wheres the option to restart the round in multiplayer mode? Or just quit it to get back to the menu screen? The only option I had when a round began dreadfully was to quit the game altogether, then restart it. I know Sony frequently updates titles through online patches, and thats one oversight that needs to be dealt with in a future free download. Otherwise, this is an excellent golf title and a great addition to the PS3 library. Hardcore sports gamers may not care for its simplicity, but let me ask you this: how many PS3 titles can you play with your mom? Four stars out of five
