Springhill High to host NSSAF provincial tourney

SPRINGHILL - Homero Berges scored two goals, including the overtime winner, as the Springhill High Golden Eagles defeated Clare 3-2 here Saturday in NSSAF Division 3 qualifier action.

With the win, Springhill advances to the provincial championship tournament that they will host Friday and Saturday at the Lions Park field behind the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre.

In Division 2 girls action, the Amherst Regional High School Vikettes advanced to the provincial championship tournament with a convincing 5-0 win over SAERC in Port Hawkesbury.

Marlon Smith scored three times for Amherst with Nicola Sperry adding two goals.

On Friday, Amherst advanced to the final with a 3-2 win over North East Kings with Smith, Kelli Burbine and Chrysti Harrison each scoring single goals.

The ARHS Vikings lost their chance to advance losing in a shootout to Barrington High.

In other action, the Oxford Regional High Golden Bears are moving on to the Division 4 boys championship tournament following a 2-1 win in Lunenburg as Brian Margeson scored both Oxford goals.

Oxford advanced to the qualifier final with a 3-0 win over Baddeck with Travis Griffin scoring twice and Margeson scoring once.

The Pugwash District High Lady Panthers are going to be vying for their second consecutive NSSAF Division 4 girls championship after defeating the Baddeck Academy Broncos 2-1 in Pugwash.

Toni McKellar had both goals for Pugwash.
