Bird foursome soars to victory carding 13-under at DU tourney

AMHERST - Team Steven Bird carded an amazing 13-under par round of 58 in the high winds of the Tantramar Marshes to win the annual Ducks Unlimited Golf Tournament Wednesday.

Birds team, consisting of Doug Marks and Jamie Crockett tamed the winds and two teams that finished the event at 11 under for the title and a set of Ducks Unlimited Canada golf bags for the victory.

For them to shoot this well in those winds is something, co-ordintor Bruce Beal, an 18-year-veteran of th DU event, said.

Everything went well, The golf was secondary really as we are trying to raise money for Wildlife conservation and awareness of what DU does, he added.

The event, always held on the second Wednesday in September, attracted 24-teams to the event, down from last year. Beal and other members of the committee hope the event can be enhanced and make its way back in 2008 to continue with the tradition of DU events.

We are all here for a good time. Its nice to see people smile. I talked with one of the groups that finished second, a husband and wife, and they didnt care if they won or not. They had a good time and thats what its all about, he said.

A number of great prizes were awarded to players in the event, participants went home with items from the silent auction, several prizes for competitions on the course were awarded and one lucky golfer cam within a whisper of going home with $5,000 in cash for a hole in one.

I dont know who it was, but someone hit the pin right behind me, Beal said.

It didnt go in but it was so close.
