Instructor Jenny Brine was on the scene at the Rotary Centennial Park to teach more than 20 Amherst youngsters the fundamentals of golf.

Kids were shown the proper form and technique of a golf swing and practised chipping and putting. Brine said the aim of the program is just to get kids playing the game and to show them ways to hit a ball accurately.

Town of Amherst director of community and economic development Dwight Jones was pleased to land the national golf program in the Amherst.

We wanted to expose kids to this national instructional golf program, he said. Its a challenging sport that the children can play for a lifetime.

Were just pleased that they had an opportunity to come and visit and we could expose the kids to this very worthwhile program.

Jones said the town is currently working on bringing in another, more advanced version of the Future Links program. If all goes as planned, that session should run near the end of August.

In the meantime, an eight-week kids golf program is underway at the Amherst Golf Club, led by club pro Frank McShane.
