Colts fail to earn home playoff date

With a home playoff date on the line the Swift Current Colts were victimized for three touchdowns in the final 5:37 of play in a 26-10 loss to the visiting Weyburn Eagles.

The loss means the Colts travel to Weyburn on Saturday for a Moose Jaw High School Football League quarter final contest.

Swift Current finished the season with a 2-4 record, good enough for a three-way tie for fourth spot in the seven team league. When the tie breaking format was applied Weyburn placed fourth, Swift Current settled for fifth, and Vanier captures sixth. Ironically, there was also a three-way tie for top spot in the league, with three teams posting 5-1 records. First place went to Moose Jaw Peacock, second went to Yorkton, while Moose Jaw Central fell from top spot with an undefeated record all the way to third after dropping their final regular season game to Peacock.

Swift Current held a 10-7 half time lead over Weyburn on Tuesday before giving up 19 late unanswered points.

Jon Unger opened the scoring with a 42-yard field goal in the final minutes of the opening quarter to give the Colts a 3-0 lead. Weyburn replied with an early second quarter touchdown by Kirk Winter to open a 7-3 advantage. The Colts rebounded just 1:45 later when Marcus Mayall hauled in a 47-yard touchdown reception during his only catch of the game.

Swift Current led 10-7 at the half and they clung to a three point lead after a scoreless third quarter.

Weyburn scored the winning touchdown with 5:37 left on the clock when Eagles leading rusher Reece Williams ran in a major from 37 yards. Williams finished the game with 128 yards on nine carries.

Eagles defensive back Tyler Kwochka snuffed out a late Colts scoring drive and returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown with 2:25 left in the contest. Weyburn put the game out of reach when Bryce MacMillan punched in a major from 15 yards out. MacMillan ran for 122 yards on 15 carries.

Overall Weyburn ran for 378 yards on 40 carries, giving them an impressive 9.45 yards per carry average. The Eagles only had 36 yards through the air on three receptions.

Swift Current had 246 yards in total offence, earning 150 yards on 25 rushing attempts and adding 96 yards on six receptions on 18 attempts. Casper Hoffman was the Colts go to offensive player, rushing for 140 yards on a game high 17 carries. Quarterback Grady Lamontagne completed six of 18 passing attempts and was intercepted once.
