Semifinal win gives Cougars boost of confidence

TRURO - The Cobequid Cougars got a shot in the arm in a couple of ways Thursday.
Their 85-67 win over the Northumberland Nighthawks in their NSSAF Division 1 Northumberland Region semifinal at CEC was a confidence booster, but it also identified some issues in their game that need to be ironed out before they host Saturday's final at 3 p.m.
"It feels really good to get this one because it's a confidence builder and we're not going in as underdogs," said Cougars Grade 11 forward Ryan Pedersen.
The No. 1 ranked Cougars will take on the winner of the 2-3 matchup between the North Nova Gryphons and Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals last night at North Nova. Results of the game were unknown at press time.
But they have some work to do before then, as evidenced by coach Marc Roberts' lengthy conversation with his players in the locker room after Thursday's tilt.
"We need to talk a lot more and our bench players need to help the starters by talking and getting us going when we start to slump," Pedersen said.
The Cougars crept out of the gate and allowed the No. 4 ranked Nighthawks to keep pace through much of the opening quarter.
"But coach gave us a talking to," Pedersen said. "We knew we could play better and we did."
Andrew Myette led the team with 13 points while Emad Khalek and Nick Roberts drained 12 points each. T.J. Jordan poured in 10 points, Daniel MacLeod netted nine, Shane Stonehouse collected eight, Tyrell Johnson had seven, Brandon MacKay finished with six and Jalen Talbot had five.
Although Pedersen said he and his
teammates are determined to punch their ticket for a return trip to provincials on Saturday, he said he doesn't feel the problems that plagued the Cougars Thursday will surface again.
"We're going to have a good, hard practice (today) and we don't know who we're going to play but whoever it is we're going to give them all we've got."
