CHARLOTTETOWN - The Amherst Regional High School Vikings travelled to P.E.I. yesterday to compete in the three-day Federation Classic, a Maritime-wide, 12-team tournament hosted by Charlottetown Rural High School.
"It's a really talented pool of teams," Vikings coach Reg Caulfield said. "We play against Division 1 and 2 teams but most of the teams in the tournament are Division 1 teams."
The Vikings kicked off the season with a record of 16-0, but are now sitting at 19-6.
"Some of our losses were the result of not having a full squad over Christmas," Caulfield said.
"Since Christmas we've worked very hard in the area of quick decision making and fine tuning all areas, especially in the defensive end of the court."
The Vikings are a team with a mix of veterans and rookies.
"We are a true team," Caulfield said. "They're a good group of kids. We have six strong players and the other players have come across tremendously."
Caulfield hopes some of his less-experienced players step up to be counted on in the new year
"As a coach, I'm looking to find out who's going to come to the forefront off the bench in the next couple of months," Caulfield said. "We can't win with six players. We've been fortunate so far but you can't rely on six players.
"We've had a great season so far. We have overexceeded what our expectations were at the beginning of the season, and we want to keep exceeding expectations."
A results from the Vikings' game yesterday was not available at press time.
