Vikings bring home championship at P.E.I. tournament

CHARLOTTETOWN - The Amherst Vikings captured their second tournament title of the season as they defeated the top-seeded P.E.I. team, Charlottetown Rural, 48-42 on Saturday at the Bluefield High Hoop Classic.
The Vikings, playing without their top offensive player Richard Hope, carried out their game plan to perfection and played their best defensive game of the season.
"The team has been on a winning streak and is executing in all aspects of the game in a team fashion," said Vikings coach Reg Caulfield.
"We need to continue to focus during every practice on fundamentals and becoming stronger one-on-one players."
In the championship game, Sammy Mohamad and Dylan Rushton led the offensive attack with 14 points each, Kevin Lepage added 12 points, Ryan Budd four and C.J. Curtis four.
Mohamad was named player of the game.
The Vikings advanced to the championship game by defeating Colonel Gray 54-45. Player-of-the-game Budd led the offensive attack with 14 points. In the other semifinal, Charlottetown Rural defeated the Sackville Kingfishers 64-56.
