The Swift Current Comprehensive High School Ardens rugby team is closing the gap between themselves and one of their provincial rivals, the Notre Dame Hounds. Although the Ardens lost both games in Wilcox to the defending provincial champion Hounds, the Ardens are beginning to worry the Hounds about their competition from the west.

In the opening game the Ardens matched up against the Hounds' junior squad with a mix of veterans and rookies. The Ardens found themselves trailing 12-0 at halftime but responded with a strong effort in the second half led by a Kelsey Beisel try. Amaysha Banman struck the ball well but her conversion was off to the side as the game finished 17-5 in favor of the host Hounds.

The second game saw the Hounds top 15 players on the pitch in the senior game. The Ardens had the wind at their back and with some tactical kicking from Amanda Farnsworth they were pressing on Notre Dame's goal line but were stuffed on three separate occasions.

Eventually the Hounds took advantage of a lucky bounce and ran 70 metres for a try to lead 7-0 at the halftime break.

The Ardens came out hard in the second half but were unable to contain Notre Dame's outside centre. After some adjustments were made by Ardens' back coach Wyatt Evans things really began to tighten up. Kelsey Beisel and Ammaysha Banman both scored second half tries for the Ardens as the Ardens were outscored 14-10 in a 21-10 loss.

Ardens' coach Chris Chapman noted that the Hounds were defeating the Ardens by 50-60 point margins last season so to keep the score within 11 points on Saturday was a great accomplishment.

Chapman was also proud of the Ardens' teamwork and is looking forward to playing the Hounds again in their first league game on Wednesday.
