Colts football team gallops to third place victory

A blocked extra point was the difference in a SCCHS Colts 21-20 win over the host Medicine Hat McCoy Colts in the Rangeland Football Conference third place game.
Swift Current jumped out to a 14-0 start and led 21-10 at the half before calling on their defence to protect the lead.
"Saturday was an amazing day. I was so happy for our guys. Some of the guys have been around for four years and have dealt with some pretty tough times and have taken some pretty tough losses. For us to send our Grade 12s off in their last game of High School football with a big win is something pretty special," Colts Head Coach Derek Murdoch said.
McCoy scored with two minutes left to make it a one-point game, but Grade 12 linebacker Tyler Friesen blocked the convert to lift the Colts to the thrilling victory.
"It was just an unbelievable feeling when we saw the ball kind of get wacked. It was pretty exciting," Murdoch said.
He noted that the team made impressive progress during their first season returning to the Alberta-based Rangeland Football Conference.
"We always kind of thought we had a good team and we knew that we were going to be facing the challenge of playing teams for the first time and trying to adapt to some different styles."
Swift Current opened the playoffs with a 21-17 win over the Medicine Hat Crescent Heights Vikings but dropped the league semi-final versus eventual league champion Brooks. Despite the loss, the playoff format allowed the Colts to advance to a third-place showdown versus McCoy.
"We looked at it as an opportunity to finish on a positive note and get a win for our Grade 12s and we were able to do that and the guys kind of refocussed and reloaded and we got the ending that we were looking for."

I made the trek up to the Medicine Hat last Saturday to watch this game and I can tell you first hand that this was the most action packed high school football game I have ever watched. From blocked plays to fumble recoveries, I think these kids finally proved themselves talented. Considering the weather we had to put up with including rain, snow, sleet and hail plus wind (go figure), I think those kids did a good job and enjoyed themselves doing so. Their dedication really shone through as they all lined up on the snow covered field, slipping and sliding as they dove for the ball with no fear in their shortsleeved shirts. Funny, the only time I was dissapointed was when the head coach (Murdoch) couldnt keep his yap shut, and earned us a 15 yard penalty. Even though it put the kids back, they pushed on and managed to win by a single point and take home 3rd place in their division. It was also very heartwarming to see how many Swift Current fans and parents were able to make it. Im pretty sure we had just as many, if not more than the McCoy team, and I wouldnt doubt if we were cheering louder too! Way to go Colts!
