SACKVILLE - If theres such a thing as a good loss, the Mount Allison Mounties experienced it in their Atlantic University Sport football season-opener last weekend in Antigonish.

The Mounties held their own with last seasons AUS runner-up St. Francis Xavier X-Men and had a chance to win it at the end with a first-and-10 on the St. F.X. 16-yard line, but couldnt find the end zone and wound up losing 29-24.

Still, for a team head coach Kelly Jeffrey said he didnt think his club matched up well against, to have come that close is a good positive to take into Saturdays home-opener against the Quebec conferences Sherbrooke Vert et Or.

It was a tough game to lose, Jeffrey said. X played real well, but we felt we played well enough to win.

Every one of our season goals is still intact. We can still make the playoffs and we can still have a winning record.

A winning record since the advent of interlocking play between the Atlantic and Quebec conferences in 2002 is something the Mounties dont have. Mount Allison has won just twice in 12 starts in interlocking play a 21-4 victory over Montreal in 2002, and a 38-10 decision against Bishops in 2006.

It will be the second meeting between the Vert et Or and Mounties. Sherbrooke won 26-13 in Quebec in 2005. The Vert er Or were victorious in their season-opener last week, racking up 635 yards of offence in a 45-17 trouncing of the McGill Redmen.

Rain is also in the forecast Saturday, so MacAulay Field, already underwater this week thanks to post-tropical storm Hanna, could be in soggy shape.

Poor weather probably favours them, Jeffrey said. But itll be the same conditions for both teams.

Jeffrey said his team came through last week healthy, and might only make a couple of minor changes to his dress list this week.
