Swift Current Comprehensive High School Principal Bryan Braun recently convened the SCCHS Grounds Committee in hopes of moving forward with a plan to improve upon the current athletic field and track at the Comp.

Among the stakeholders who may be included in the project are the Swift Current Comp. High School, the Swift Current Soccer Association, Swift Current Minor Football, the Chinook School Division, the Zone Three Sports Council, the South West Athletic Conference, and the Cypress Hills Regional College.

The exact nature of the plan is still up in the air but is likely to include an eight-lane all-weather track, a new athletic field, and possibly an additional athletic field if space permits. The possibility of installing lights or even field-turf has also been discussed.

Currently the SCCHS Ardens and Colts soccer teams play and practice off-site, while the football team uses the athletic field located north of the gymnasium.

As a coach of the Ardens soccer team I have always been a bit disappointed that the soccer teams were forced to play and practice off-site. You can't help but feel like a second-class sport when the football team seems to always take precedence over your program. When the soccer programs were in their infancy it was understandable that they got the short end of the stick but 11 or 12 years later it is less understandable to myself and many associated with the high school soccer programs.

Well now it seems as though the winds of change are blowing and I give Braun full credit for pushing the agenda and getting the ball rolling on this project that has been rumored for at least a few years.

Braun is a self-confessed 'sports nut' and it is obvious that he feels passionately about offering first-class sports venues at his high school.

The Comp. athletic program already benefits from having one of the largest, if not the largest, high school gymnasiums in the province which allows them to host top-notch volleyball and basketball tournaments. Make no mistake about it the Comp. gym is a preferred tournament destination of teams especially boys volleyball teams who enjoy playing in the spacious gym with the high roof which allows for long rallies where the most skilled team often prevails.

The football field and the track on the other hand are both well below standard especially considering the Comp hosts track and field district meets each year on the six-lane track that is sometimes overgrown with weeds.

A new all-weather track could also be the centre-piece in a possible proposal to host the 2012 Saskatchewan Summer Games which would be a great opportunity to showcase the growth and development of Swift Current over the years.

Where the money will come from for such a project is yet to be determined but I can't help but think that having Premier Brad Wall, a former track and field provincial champion, living right here in the city can only help speed up the process in some manner.
