Wildcats edge Rebels
The Swift Current Diamond Energy AAA Midget Wildcats earned a pair of one-goal wins over the Regina Rebels in a home-and-away weekend set.
Sunday the Wildcats used a pair of second period goals from Tiara Schoenroth to upend the Rebels 2-1.
Schoenroth notched her sixth and seventh goals of the season with two assists from Shelby Davey and a single from Baylee Gillanders.
The Wildcats trailed after the first period when Chelsea Bender scored on the powerplay for the Rebels.
Chelsie Lowe pushed her record to 5-2 with the win.
Saturday at the iplex the Wildcats allowed the Rebels to stay in the contest with two powerplay goals but got an even-strength goal from Brienna Gillanders on a tic tac toe passing play from Kali Gillanders and Brittney Erlandson to give the Wildcats a 3-2 win.
Erlandson continued her breakout season when she opened the scoring late in the first period with an unassisted shorthanded goal. Erlandson scored only one goal in 28 games last season but has already notched seven goals in 11 games this campaign.
Shelby Nisbet gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead early in the middle frame when she banged in a rebound off a Shelby Davey shot that trickled behind Kristina Mader.
Michala Jeffries earned her fourth win in goal.
Special teams were an area of concern for the Wildcats as they allowed two powerplay goals to the Rebels in six opportunities and failed to score on three powerplays.
The pair of wins improves the Wildcats record to 9-3-1 and into a first place tie with the Prince Albert Bears who also have two games in hand over Swift Current.
