AMHERST - The two-time defending NSSAF Division 2 boys basketball champion Amherst Regional High School Vikings will kick off the new season this weekend with a four-team tournament.

The Antigonish Royals, Tatamagouche Titans and Oxford Golden Bears will join the Vikings at the tournament that kicks off Friday and runs through Saturday.

Coach Reg Caulfield is back this season and feels his club has a good shot at competing for a third straight provincial championship.

This team has an excellent chance of getting back and, with dedication, a focus on improving our skills and execution, well be a contender, Caulfield said, in a recent interview.

Only one starter, team captain Loren Fawthrop, is back from last years club that won the provincial title on its home court.

Hes joined by six other players who also made major contributions to the title run last year, including steady contributors Jamie Gamblin, Lawson MacLeod, Dwayne Ripley, Dave Siddall, Corey OBrien and Ryan Oake.

Four players have graduated from the JV Vikings including Andrew Gilroy, Corey Dewitt, Nick Smith and Chris Meaney while the newcomer to the program is Dave Manning.

Don Gamblin, long-time coach of the Parrsboro Warriors and principal of Riover Hebert District High School, is also back as an assistant coach.

Joining the coaching staff this year is Thomas Skabar, who played a key role in guiding the Vikings to the provincial title two seasons ago.
