AMHERST - Students are always seeking a way to help pay for their education.

A big part of life in and around Cumberland County athletics centres on hockey and interscholastic sports.

In an effort to help student athletes move towards their dreams, the Amherst Ramblers Alumni Scholarship Society has recently been formed to distribute bursaries to deserving athletes living or playing in the Amherst area.

This society will raise funds through membership dues and some fundraising, such as an alumni night, social events etc. and in the near future hopes to be able to offer official tax receipts for those who would like to donate larger sums or memorials.

"Everybody knows how important a post secondary education is but we also know how very expensive it can be. With this in mind what better way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Junior hockey in Amherst than to form this society to give deserving athletes who meet the criteria the financial chance to get that education, Kim Wry, society director said.

"We are presently trying to compile a list of people to contact but because this number could well reach over one thousand, and a lot of past players and coaches no longer live here, we are relying on help from the public with names, addresses or e-mail addresses so we can make sure that anybody interested in becoming a member has that opportunity,' she added.

There have been large number of entities in the 40 years of junior hockey history. Those entities include the Amherst Jr. A. Ramblers, Amherst Jr. B. Ramblers, Amherst Jr. A. Mooseheads and prior to that, the Amherst Senior Ramblers and Amherst St. Pats Intermediate A hockey team.

This makes for hundreds, maybe thousands of players, coaches, assistant coaches, training staff, general managers, executive members, volunteers, sponsors and supporters that have been involved with these teams to be contacted.

"We hope most will agree with this societys objective and become a member."

Membership will be open to anyone with a connection to the club in its history and membership fees will be $50 every five years. Individual donations or memorials for which tax receipts will be issued once charitable foundation status has been achieved will be accepted.

The Amherst Ramblers Alumni Scholarship Society supports the Amherst Jr. A. Ramblers but is a totally separate non-profit organization. The current directors of this society are Keith Blenkhorn, Willie Boyle, Ken Crockett, Stephen Maltby and Kim Wry.

All monies raised will be used for the bursary program.

" We are also in the process of putting information on the Amherst Ramblers web site www.amherstramblers.com and anybody interested will be able to join or donate online, find out news about upcoming events, etc."

Anyone wishing to join or know of somebody with an interest, a brochure could be sent to them.

For more, contact one of the above directors or e-mail Kim Wry at rambleralumni@gmail.com or by phone at 902-667-2823.
