SACKVILLE, N.B. (Staff) - Corey Yantha, the keeper for the Mount Allison Soccer Mounties has been selected as the Joey's Pizzeria Athlete of the Week.
He led his team in two road matches this weekend, playing in both Moncton and Fredericton.
In treacherous, hurricane-type conditions on Saturday, Yantha's skill and ability was evident by his superb ball handling, as he led his team to a 1-1 tie with the UniveristÉ de Moncton.
On Sunday, in a rematch with UNB, he was outstanding, despite being down 2-0, and playing with a one-man deficit. He bravely dealt with all that came in his direction, and played a major role in his team's successful second half. The final result was 2-1 for the Reds, but in the previous week's matchup, the Mounties lost to the Reds by a 5-1 score.
"As an athlete who wants so much from his own game that he sometimes loses control, Corey was the dominant figure behind his team this weekend showing nothing but support and encouragement,' said head coach Barry Cooper.
Other athlete of the week nominees were Elissa McCarron (women's soccer) and Ishamar Savory (football).
