ANTIGONISH-River Hebert District High school alumni Peter Beaton, Brandon McLellan and David Quinn have captured the attention of their hometown.
Together, they currently represent three-fourths of the St. Francis Xavier men’s curling team that will be competing this coming weekend in Fredericton against such men’s university teams as St. Mary’s University, the University of New Brunswick, the University of Prince Edward Island and Memorial University.
The team’s fourth member is Antigonish native Calum MacDonald.
“I think it is pretty awesome to have three-fourths of the team being our local boys representing a big university like St. FX,” stated Joggins native Gwen Archibald.
Founded in 1853, St. Francis Xavier University boasts a student body of 5,100. That’s approximately 5,000 more students than the entire student body of RHDH.
Defying the odds is nothing new for RHDH curlers Brandon McLellan and David Quinn, two of the three alumni (Peter Beaton is the other) on the St. FX squad.
In 2013, Brandon McLellan, David Quinn, Courtney Porter and Avery Beaton, Peter’s sister, defeated Cobequid Education Centre (CEC), a school of 1,600 students, to capture the Northumberland Regional mixed curling championship.
The Atlantic University curling championships will be held at the Capital Winter Club in Fredericton, New Brunswick from January 3 to 5, 2014. Four teams, two men’s and two women’s teams, will earn the right to represent the Atlantic Region at the CIS University curling championship in Regina, Saskatchewan in March.
