Swift Current's Reagan Hadden was the only Southwest rink to advance to Sunday play at the SaskTel Southern Men's Playdowns in Estevan, but his five game run ended with a 7-2 loss to Jason Krupski from the Whitewood Curling Club.

The Hadden rink never got on track in their C event semi-final match, with Krupski breaking open a 2-1 game with a pair in the fourth and a steal of three in the fifth to open an insurmountable 7-1 lead. Hadden counted a single in the seventh before the teams shook hands.

Hadden and the rink of third Joel Denning, second Nathan Glassford and lead Cody Mitchell were 2-3 at the 16-team triple-knockout but needed to win twice on Sunday if they hoped to advance to the SaskTel Provincial Men's Championship in Melfort on Jan. 30 to Feb. 3.

The Swift Current rink extended their stay in the field of teams playing on Sunday with a nerve wracking racking 10-8 extra end win over Regina's Clint Krismer in C event play on Saturday. Hadden counted two in the 11th end to capture the win in a game which Hadden nearly let slip through his fingers. Hadden scored a five ender in the third to take a 5-2 lead and he enjoyed a 7-3 advantage after five ends. Regina's Krismer counted a pair in the sixth to pull within 7-4, and after Hadden scored a single in the seventh, Krismer scored singles in the eighth, ninth and 10th ends to send the game into extra ends.

The Hadden foursome were put into a must-win situtaion when they were handed a 7-4 loss by Langenburg's Jeff Hartung during Draw #5 B event action on Friday evening. While Hadden was held to singles in the first, third, fifth and seventh ends, Hartung counted multiple-point ends thanks to scoring a pair in the second and fourth ends and a three-point end in the sixth.

Hadden scored an unlikely win in his B event opening contest, falling behind 7-2 after five ends but posting points in the final five ends to collect an 8-7 win over Wade Sydorko from Weyburn. After scoring a single with the hammer in the sixth to pull within 7-3, Hadden stole one in the seventh, a pair in the eighth, and singles in both the ninth and 10th end to steal the victory.

Hadden had a less than friendly welcome by Brent Gedak from the host Estevan Curling Club, with Gedak powering to an 8-3 win in eight ends. Gedak scored four in the opening end and stole a single in the second to open a dominating 5-0 lead. Hadden replied with singles in the third, fifth and eighth before shaking hands early.

Clayton Wicks had his run at Southerns end with a 1-3 record after dropping an 8-5 game to Wade Sydorko during Draw #8 action on Saturday afternoon. Sydorko held leads of 2-0, 4-1 and 5-2 before Wicks rebounded with a three ender in the eighth to tie the game at 5-5. Sydorko scored three in the ninth to end the game early.

Wicks rink featured third Ron Bailey, second Wayne Oakman and lead Mike Francis.

Wicks was bumped into the C event when he came out on the losing end of an 8-7 extra end decision to Regina's Mike Eberle in Draw #5 action on Friday evening. Wicks had rebounded from a 2-0 first end deficit with a pair in the second and a steal of two in the third to open a 4-2 lead. Eberle regained a 5-4 lead with a single in the fourth and a pair in the fifth. The rinks traded singles over the next five ends, with Wicks forcing the extra end by scoring a single in the tenth with the hammer.

Wicks had advanced into the B event quarter final with an exciting 7-6 extra end win over Regina's Clint Krismer. Wicks was cruising along with a 5-1 lead after five ends before Krismer rebounded with singles in the sixth, seventh and eight ends. Wicks opened a 6-4 lead with a single in the ninth, but Krismer forced the extra end with a pair in the 10th end.

The Wicks rink had an uphill battle in their playdown opener when they suffered an 8-4 loss to Moose Jaw's Joel Jordison, the 2009 Saskatchewan Tankard champion. Jordison had a trio of multiple point ends to win their opener over Wicks. Jordison counted two-point ends in the third and eighth ends, and they counted a three ender in the fifth and stole a single in the ninth. Wicks had singles in the second and fourth, and counted a pair in the seventh to pull within 5-4 with three ends remaining.

Shaylor Layman's rink from Lafleche bowed out of the SaskTel Southern Men's Playdowns in Estevan after three straight games.

In a must win C event game on Saturday morning Layman dropped an 8-1 decision to Clint Krismer from Regina's Tartan Curling Club. With the rinks tied at 1-1 after two ends, Krismer took total control with a pair in the third and he stole points in the next four ends before the teams shook hands after seven ends.

Shaylor Layman skipped the Lafleche Curling Club rink which also featured third Ron Lucas, second David Sproule and lead Tyler Sewell.

Layman dropped his B event draw 9-2 to Jason Krupski from Whitewood. Krupski scored three enders in the first and fourth ends before the teams shook hands after six ends.

Layman's rink made their Southern Men's debut on Thursday but dropped a 6-2 nine end decision to Chris Busby from Regina's Highland Curling Club. In the playdown opening loss they could only manage singles in the fifth and seventh ends. Busby had hammer and blanked the first three ends before taking a pair in the fourth. The Regina rink scored all their points in multi-point ends, also counting a pair in the sixth and eighth.
