AMHERST - Adam Chipman knew right away what the Ramblers were getting when they acquired centre Peter Baldwin on Wednesday from the Yarmouth Mariners.
The two were teammates with the Valley Wildcats major midgets.
"I played two years with him," the Ramblers captain said. "He's a great guy and I'm pretty excited to have him here.
"He's good on the faceoff, plays solid defensively and has great speed, and he'll bring some maturity to the dressing room and help keep things calm."
Baldwin skated for the first time with his new teammates yesterday. The Ramblers held a light workout a day after dropping a 5-2 decision to the Woodstock Slammers, who are in town for the back end of the home-and-home Maritime Junior A Hockey League series tomorrow at 7 p.m.
Baldwin was at Woodstock's training camp before being dealt to Yarmouth prior to the start of the season, so there's some extra motivation heading into this game.
"I'd like to show them what they're missing out on," Baldwin said. "I didn't see them when I was with Yarmouth, but I understand they have a pretty deadly power play, so staying out of the penalty box will be a big key."
Baldwin, 20, wasn't part of Yarmouth's long-range plans, as the Mariners have undergone a major makeover with half a dozen trades in the last month.
"They're trying to make a run next year,"?Baldwin said. "I guess I kind of saw it coming, but it's always hard when you find out you've been traded. But it's a good opportunity for me to go a little bit farther here."
Ramblers head coach and general manager Corey Crocker said Baldwin would likely be on one of the top two forward units, but has yet to determine who he'll be matched up with.
Amherst has won four of its last five home games. Woodstock (21-0-0-1) has outscored the Ramblers (11-14-0-1) 15-4 in three meetings this season, two in New Brunswick and one at the showcase weekend in Summerside.
Amherst visits the Dieppe Commandos on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
