SPRINGHILL - The Springhill High School Golden Eagles defeated the SAERC Saints 70-56 in the championship of the 16th annual Schiefer's Ultramar Tip Off Invitational here Saturday.
Meaghan Moore struck for 20 points, Brittany Barton hooped 19 and Kirsten Gogan shot 10 to help spark the Golden Eagles, ahead 32-27 at the half.
Shauna Ryan meshed eight, Leah Crowe had three, Tricia Thompson two and Meagan Bowers and Danika Beaton added foul shots for SHS who transformed a 39-38 lead into a 53-38 bulge over a four minute run midway through the third quarter.
Tournament all-star Jessica Cahill had a game-high 24 for SAERC.
Springhill finished the round robin event with a 3-0 record, while SAERC 2-1, Memorial High Magic 1-2 and Hants East Rural High Tigers 0-3 rounded out the field.
The tourney opener saw Barton, chosen the tourney MVP, strike for 18 points, followed by Crowe with 16 and all-star Meaghan Moore manage 12 in winning 64-36 over Memorial. Thompson, Ryan and Emily Moore each had six, followed by Bowers with four, Gogan three, Beaton two and Taylor MacDonald with one.
The Golden Eagles received 13 points from Ryan, 11 from Barton and 10 from Crowe en route to a 60-30 win over Hants East earlier Saturday.
Bowers had eight, Meagan Moore seven, and Beaton and Jill Casey contributed six points each. Thompson four, MacDonald three and Gogan two rounded out the SHS offence.
Hants East was represented on the all-star selections by Jenny Smith while Nadine Morrison garnered the Memorial selection.
The Golden Eagles next see action Thursday, Dec. 3 when they travel to Oxford.
"Everyone contributed to it, whether it was from the offensive or defensive ends," SHS co-coach Charlie Chambers said of the tourney win. "We hope that we can build from this weekend. The girls need to realize that every possession is important and that hard work usually gives positive results."
