Auburn wins Marshlands tournament
AMHERST - Tournament MVP Sandra Medley scored 14 points and Donica Willis added 10 as the Auburn High Eagles defeated the host Amherst Regional High School Vikettes 60-50 to capture championship at the Marshlands Girls High School Basketball Tournament here Saturday.
Chika Chiekwe added eight points for Auburn, who led 14-13 at the half, while Catherine Young with seven, Jillian McCracken scored six, Erica Mitton scored four and Courtney Wills added one.
Emily Burke scored 21 for the Vikettes while Morgan Lewis scored 13, Marlon Smith had eight, Natalie Gould had five, Taylor Cormier scored two and Allie Gallagher chipped in with one.
Members of the tournament all-star team included Allison Trenholm of Dr. John H. Gillis from Antigonish, Sam Hyson of North Nova, Jenny Robinson of Tantramar, Sara Moore of Charlottetown and Marlon Smith of ARHS.
Amherst opened the tourney with a 67-55 win over Dr. J.H. Gillis with Burke scoring 24 points, Gould scoring 14 and Smith adding 12.
Also scoring for Amherst were Lewis with nine, Gallagher with four and Cormier and Taylor MacDonald with two each.
Martha Jennings had 19 for Antigonish.
In their other game, Burke scored 12, Lewis had 11 and Meredith Smith scored 10 as the Vikettes defeated the Charlottetown Rural Raiders 60-28.
Marlon Smith had six points for Amherst with Gould and Kelly Cormier each scoring four, Taylor MacKenzie adding three and Taylor Cormier, MacDonald and Laura Holloway each chipping in two.
Allyson Seviour scored nine for Charlottetown.
The North Nova Gryphons opened the two-day tourney with a 60-37 loss to Dr. J.H. Gillis with Hyson leading the way with 11 points.
Also scoring for North Nova were: Brittany Heighton with eight, Mallory Munro with six, Katelyn Cameron with five, Sheray Reddick-Jackson with four, Pele Baillie with two and Krista Dunn with one.
Trenholm scored 12 for Dr. J.H. Gillis.
In their second game, North Nova lost 51-25 to Auburn.
Dunn, Munro and Leisa Doyle each had four in the losing effort for the Gryphons with Katelyn Cameron and Hyson adding two. Hilary Pelerine, Reddick-Jackson, Melyssa Todd and Heighton each had two.
Medley scored 20 for Auburn.
In their final tourney game, North Nova defeated the Tantramar Titans of Sackville, N.B. 50-37 as Heighton scored 12 points to lead the way.
Hyson with 11, Doyle with eight, Munro with seven and Reddick-Jackson and Dunn with six each also scored.
Kaylee Atkinson led Tantramar with seven points.
In other games, Charlottetown defeated Tantramar 39-38, Auburn defeated Tantramar 74-37 and Dr. J.H. Gillis defeated Charlottetown 54-19.
In the consolation game, North Nova lost to the Antigonish Royals by a score of 60-37.
