Sydney knocks Amherst Selects from title shot

AMHERST  The Amherst Little League All-Stars fell behind early and never managed to catch up dropping a 17-9 decision to Sydney at the David Maltby Memorial Little League Tournament on Sunday.

AMHERST  The Amherst Little League All-Stars fell behind early and never managed to catch up dropping a 17-9 decision to Sydney at the David Maltby Memorial Little League Tournament on Sunday.

Amherst was eliminated from the tournament with the loss despite going 2-1.

Matt Ball was the winning pitcher for Sydney giving up seven hits while walking two and striking out 10. Ryan Goodwin suffered the loss with Alex Embree, Jaret Collins and Brad Jennings also pitching. They gave up 15 hits, walked eight and struck out 10.

Tyler Pyke and Norman MacDonald each homered to lead Sydney at the plate while Mike MacMillan singled three times, doubled and singled.

Joe ODell continued his hot hitting blasting a three-run home run and adding a single for Amherst while Andrew Skinner and Embree each doubled and Corey Zollner, Collins and Nick Chapman each singled.

Amherst opened in fine fashion on Saturday rallying to post a 7-5 win over Midland, Mass. as ODell homered and Embree singled twice.

Zollner and Chapman also singled for Amherst with Goodwin, Jennings and Embree pitching. They gave up four hits, walked six and struck out seven. Ben Burger and Bobby Farrell pitched for Midland with Burger homering for the Massachusetts club.

In their second contest, ODell homered and singled as Amherst nipped Waltham 4-3.

Skinner went the distance for Amherst giving up seven hits, walking five and striking out nine while Nick Nesche suffered the loss giving up five hits, walking three and striking out five.

Zollner doubled for Amherst while Embree and Jennings each added singles.
