AMHERST – All Atlantic University Sport eyes will be on the Mount Allison Mounties football team when they take to the field for exhibition action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the St. Francis Xavier X-Men.
The game will give coach Kelly Jeffrey an opportunity to assess the close to 100 players who are fighting for a spot on the 2014 roster, and it will give the rest of the AUS a glimpse into a Mounties team minus Jordan Botel, who was named the AUS Most Outstanding Player last season.
The all-Canadian running back ran for 758 yards in 2013, a league high.
He never turned the ball over in 170 carries last season, and you would have to go back to 2012 and 367 carries to find him fumbling the ball.
Most important, Botel’s presence was a huge factor in Mount A’s AUS championship run, which carried them to the 2013 Uteck Bowl.
They lost that game 48-21 to perennial powerhouse Laval on Nov. 16, in Sackville.
Despite their success, the Mounties got off to a rough start last season, going 1-4 before finding their footing.
The Mounties regular season schedule starts next Saturday.

Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. – Acadia vs. Mount Allison
