Five teams vying for Landry memorial trophy
AMHERST – For the 50th consecutive season the Amherst Little League Baseball Association will host its year-end tournament beginning Saturday at the Amherst Firefighters Little League complex on Croft Street.
The Amherst Canadian Tire All-Stars will host four other teams vying for the Ernie Landry Memorial Championship Trophy.
Joining Amherst in the tournament are the Riverview A’s, New Glasgow Kinsmen, Lower Sackville Acadians and a team from Prince Edward Island.
New Glasgow is the defending champion.
This could be the last year the tournament is hosted on the Labour Day weekend as it’s getting harder for tournament organizers to find teams since most A and AA championship in all three Maritime provinces are the same weekend.
The tournament begins Saturday with games on both the Ernie Landry and Art ‘Sonny’ Foster fields and continue Sunday with the the third and fourth-place clubs playing for the consolation championship and the first and second-place teams vying for the championship.
It’s possible next year’s David Maltby tournament could be held the first week in August.
Members of the Amherst team include: Cal Hoeg, Brandon Hicks, Ethan Casey, Reese McLean and Luke Carde of the Cumberland Paving Cubs; Jackson Colborne and Reese Blakeney of the Mixers, Graden Chitty, Cole Stevens and Jordan MacKenzie of the Lions and Jackson Comeau, Tyler Baker and Zach Boudreau of the Y’s Guys.
Cubs’ coach Jeff Hoeg is the head coach.
The Amherst team was selected by a vote of the four A system team coaches. The team also played at a little league tournament in Portland, Maine in early August.
