Hoeg’s complete-game shutout paces Cubs to opening win

Y’s Guys take Game 1 of consolation series

AMHERST – The Cumberland Paving Cubs scored two runs in the fourth inning to draw first blood in their Amherst Little League championship series with the pennant-winning Lions.

Cal Hoeg threw a complete-game two-hitter as the Cubs nipped the Lions 2-0. He walked five and struck out six, while Cole Stevens was equally impressive on the mound for the Lions, giving up four hits, walking four and striking out five.

Brandon Hicks, Reece McLean, Audrey Hoeg and Broc McEachern each hit singles for the Cubs, while Stevens and Matthew Hunter hit singles for the Lions.

In the consolation final, the Y’s Guys defeated the Mixers 19-5 with Jackson Comeau hitting a home run and adding a triple and single while Tyler Baker singled twice and doubled, Zack Boudreau singled and tripled and Jayden Matheson and Jake Adams each singled twice.

Colson Brown singled and doubled and Karter Giffin, Cameron Hardie and Jeremiah Martin each singled.

Josh Arsenault singled twice for the Mixers while Ethan Herrett singled once.

Baker earned the pitching win giving up three hits, walking four and striking out 10. Isaac VanSnick pitched for the Mixers, giving up 17 hits, walking five and striking out 10.

Game two in both series goes Monday at 6 p.m.
