Brandon Greeno (left), Logan Dowe and Justin Tooke, along with Carly Jackson, travel to Magog, Quebec, in two weeks to compete at the U-18 baseball championships. The Cumberland County players play AAA baseball for the MacGregor Kinsmen, which play out of New Glasgow. Greeno is 16-years-old and Dowe and Tooke are 17-years-old. Not pictured is Carly Jackson. She was in Moncton playing hockey. The goaltender will soon travel to Calgary where she will attend a selection camp for Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 team.

AMHERST – Four Cumberland County baseball players will play on the national stage in two weeks.

“I’m excited,” said 17-year-old Logan Dowe.

Amherst’s Brandon Greeno and Carly Jackson, and Springhill’s Justin Tooke will join Dowe, who is from Amherst.

The four ball players are travelling to Magog, Quebec, where they will compete in Baseball Canada’s 2014 Under-18 National Championships.

They earned the right to represent Nova Scotia at the championships after their AAA Midget Baseball team, the MacGregor Kinsmen, beat Hammonds Plains last weekend at a national elimination tournament held in Hammonds Plains.

The championships runs Aug. 14-18, and scouts will be on hand to assess the player’s skill level.

“It will be nerve-wracking,” said Greeno. “I’ll just play like they’re not there.”

Dowe plays several positions but likes pitching, Greeno and Tooke like playing in the outfield, and Jackson plays second base.

This is the first time in three years that a Cumberland County baseball product has travel to the nationals. The last player to make the trip was Amherst’s Andrew Skinner. He competed in Moncton in 2011.

Each player needs to raise $1,200 for the trip and are currently seeking sponsorships and donations.

Anybody interested in helping the athletes make the trip to Magog can contact their coach, Ryan Thibeau, at 956-3577.
