Will attend Offense-Defense Bowl showcase in Orlando

Amherst’s Zach Cormier receives his MVP award from his receiver coach at the Offense-Defence New England Football Camp last weekend at Bryant University in Rhode Island. Cormier will play for Team USA East at Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Florida beginning in late December.

AMHERST – Standing 6’1” and weighing 240 pounds, it’s no surprise Amherst’s Zach Cormier is getting noticed.

Cormier was a Most Valuable Player award winner at the Offense-Defence New England Football Camp last weekend at Bryant University in Rhode Island.

“I’m very proud of him. He works really hard. He goes to the gym every day. This is what he really wants,” said Zach’s mom Gina Rayworth.

The football camp ran from July 20-23, and the field was 100 degrees every day in Rhode Island.

Cormier was first noticed when he attended a football camp in the U.S. last year.

“We took him down to a camp for a vacation and when we were down there they asked him to come to this camp,” said Rayworth.

Also, a coach, Milow Weems, contacted Rayworth in January and asked Zach to attend the camp in Rhode Island.

Thousands of kids apply to attend the camp but Zach was one of 175 players to be accepted.

Because of his success at the camp, Cormier will play at the Team USA East vs. Team USA West at the All-American Offense-Defence showcase games at Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The one-week showcase starts just after Christmas.

“He’s going to be seen by scouts in the States and they said he will almost automatically be back with the Team U.S.A. tryouts next year, so we will be able to go there next year as well.”

Rayworth says Zach is ecstatic about going to Orlando.

“His dream is to play college football down in the States,” she said.

Cormier was recruited to play football with the Tantramar Regional High School Titans and plays in the New Brunswick High School Football League with the Titans.

He used to play with the Cumberland County Wolfpack and will be back with them this fall to help coach the Wolfpack.

“There’s so many opportunities for football around here,” said Rayworth.
