10K run starts in New Brunswick Saturday 9 a.m.

AMHERST – Many scientists say that primal humans developed the ability to run long distances to track and run down wild animals.

Deer and antelope won’t be fleeing across the border between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia this on Saturday but hundreds of runners will make the trek.

“The Cross Border Challenge has been very positive in promoting health and fitness,” said Michael Stack, vice-president of Archway Insurance, the major sponsor of the Cross Border Challenge.

Stack was at the Cumberland YMCA Monday night to present $5,000 cheque to the Cross-Border Challenge.

“We sponsor the race because we live here and we want to feel we’re contributing to our town,” said Stack. “And, also, a lot of young people are involved in the race.”

The 6th annual Archway Insurance Cross Border Challenge festivities kick off today with the 5K run, and continues Saturday with the 10K run and the half marathon.

The 5K run starts tonight at 7:30 p.m. and awards and refreshments will be served at 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, race kit pick up opens at 6 a.m., and closes at 8:20 a.m.

The half marathon begins at 8:30 a.m. at Amherst Stadium and also finishes at Amherst Stadium.

The bus for the 10K leaves Amherst Stadium at 8:30 a.m., and the 10K starting gun will sound off at 9 a.m. in New Brunswick.

Awards, barbecue, buffet and draw prizes will be presented at 11 a.m.

All parking and registration is at Amherst Stadium.

Proceeds raised at the event go to the Cumberland YMCA.

The Cross Border Challenge is the main event on the Cross Border Series calendar, and is also a Run Nova Scotia Point Series Race.
