AMHERST – The Springhill High School Golden Eagles Division 3 girl’s slo-pitch team travels to Caledonia Friday where they will compete in the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation provincial championships.

“We need to hit,” said Doug Williams, coach of the SHS girl Eagles between exhibition games against ARHS Wednesday afternoon in Amherst. “We have a lot of good hitters and we know we can hit.”

The eight-team tournament features Barrington, SAERC, East Antigonish and North Queens in Pool A, while the Eagles are in Pool B with Parrsboro, Inverness and New Germany.

The Eagles played the No. 1 Parrsboro Warriors and Antigonish in the regional championships.

“We finished third in regionals,” said Williams. “We lost 15-5 to Parrsboro, and we also lost 6-5 to the host Antigonish, so we came close to coming in second place at the regionals.

“Parrsboro is the number one team going into the provincials. If we do end up playing them we would play them in the final,” he added.

Williams said their fielding could use some more work but adds that their pitching is very strong.

“Casie Skidmore and Stephanie McCormick are very good pitchers,” said Williams.

The Eagles have three Grade 7’s players, three Grade-9’s, four Grade-10’s, three Grade-11’s and four Grade 12’s.

“We have a nice mix,” said Williams.

The Eagles first game is against SAERC at 1 p.m.

The championship game is Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Boys Division 3 action has three Cumberland County teams hitting the ball diamond in Bridgewater.

Springhill plays their first game at Friday at 10 a.m. against Bridgewater, Parrsboro plays Richmond Friday at 1 p.m., and then the Pugwash Panthers play Forest Heights Friday at 1 p.m. as well.

The championship game is Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
