AMHERST – The Amherst Regional High School Vikings are heading to the provincial slo-pitch championships after defeating the Central Kings Gators during qualifiers Monday night at Robb’s Centennial Complex in Amherst.

The Vikings won the best-of-three qualifier by scores of 11-2 and 17-3.

“We put together some pretty good innings but we struggled a little bit,” said Charlie Chambers, Vikings coach. “We need more consistency from our pitchers with regards to throwing strikes, but that will come.”

With the win over the Gators, the Vikings travel this weekend to West Kings High School in Aylesford for the provincial championships.

“You need offence and defence to win and hopefully the kids will put that together this weekend.”

He says they will need more consistent hitting if they hope to win the provincial title.

“We’re going to need better hitting right through the line up,” said Chambers. “We need guys to get a couple of hits each and we need to put together some back-to-back hits so we can get some rallies going.”

He also said they need consistent pitching and, “defensively, we can’t afford errors.”

“We need the guys to believe themselves,” he said.

The Viking started playing slo-pitch in 2000. This is their 13th trip to the provincials in the last 15 years.

In that time they’ve won seven provincials, with their last championship coming in 2011.

How will they do in 2014?

“We have the potential to do well,” said Chambers.
