AMHERST – A new Wolfpack will be baring its teeth in Amherst in September.

“There are two siblings who attend Cumberland North Academy that approached me and asked if it was possible to form a Wolfpack cheerleading team,” said Travise Dow, Cumberland Wolfpack Football head coach. “I paused for a moment and thought about it and said, ‘why not.’ We started football from scratch and I’m sure we can start football cheerleading from scratch.”

The first night of practice was Wednesday night in the Amherst Regional High School gymnasium.

The practices are open to ages eight to 14, and 20 young people came out for the first practice.

The ARHS cheerleading team is coaching the new cheerleaders.

“The high school cheerleaders can provide leadership for the girls, and then at the age of 15 they go to high school and can be part of the high school cheerleading team,” said Dow.

Dow says cheerleading is a powerful sport with fantastic athletes.

“We promote heavily that both young men and young women can play football, and we’re going to promote that both young men and young women can join cheerleading,” said Dow.

Julie LeBlanc, the parent rep in charge, was on had to watch her 11-year-old daughter Katrina during her first practice. Katrina and her sister are the siblings who approached Dow about starting Wolfpack cheerleading.

“The kids are great and they have great mentors (the ARHS cheer team) in front of them,” said Julie. “And any opportunity you can give for kids to be active is good.”

Nothing is yet written in stone, but Dow says the cheerleaders will train one day a week throughout the summer, probably Sunday nights, and then they will cheer for the Wolfpack when they start playing football in September.

“Our team is new and will be more of a traditional cheerleading team,” said Dow. “There will be a lot of dancing, a lot of gymnastic moves and a lot of loud cheering.”

The Wolfpack football squad has their last spring practice Friday night, and then starts practicing again in September.
