Ramblers lose $28,000 during 2013-2014 season

AMHERST – The Amherst CIBC Wood Gundy Ramblers held their Annual General Meeting Wednesday night at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Amherst.

Maritime Hockey League Ramblers director Andrew Reid laid out a summary of the financial statement to the 35 people in attendance.

He started by pointing out the negatives from the 2013-2014 season.

“We lost Game 7 in the playoffs, winter storms played a significant role on attendance numbers, and we’re in the hole financially at the end of the year,” said Reid.

Total net revenue on 2013-2014 season was $375,718.88, while the total net expenses for the season was $403,830.94, for a total loss of $28,112.06 on the season.

The Ramblers season ended with a Game 7 loss to the Pictou County Weeks Crushers.

“If we would have won Game 7 it would have done a lot for our bottom line,” said Jim Henwood, Ramblers president, during the meeting.

Last year the Ramblers won Game 7 in the first round and went on to the second round, playing a total of three more home games.

– Ticket sale revenues.

Total revenue from home game ticket sales in the 2012-2013 season was $239.192.90. Total ticket sale revenue this season was $160,986.81, which is $78,206.90 less than last year.

A break down of major ticket sale revenues shows that game day sales from the previous year was down $87,328.15, but exhibition game sales were up $838.10, and season pass revenues were up $7,968.68. Season pass sales revenues went from $18,128.97 to $26.097.65.

Reid also pointed out the positives during the AGM.

“The Toonie Draw was a success, the town and the county came on board to sponsor us, the CIBC remained our major sponsor, and we made the playoffs.

Henwood said the Ramblers Toonie Draw has been the backbone to their fundraising efforts and the numbers prove it.

The draw was by far the biggest fundraiser bringing in revenues of $75,484.45, compared to only $1,294.92 during the previous season.

“If we didn’t have the Toonie Draw we would have been in serious trouble,” said Henwood. “We’ve been criticized that we’ve given up on fundraising, but we’ve concentrated on the Toonie Draw and it takes up to 80 man-hours a week.”

Another major uptick in revenue was sponsorship.

Total sponsorship numbers were $93.933.49 in 2013-2014, while that number was $59,089.94 last season, for a difference of $39,345.55.

The bottom line reveals the Ramblers need to get more fans in the seats at Amherst Stadium.

“We need to find a way to bring people back to the rink and we really hope Josh (Hepditch, new coach and general manager) will be able to do that by living in the community and being more involved in the community,” said Reid. “Because the best way for the Ramblers to raise money is to put a good product on the ice and bring more people to the rink.”

One big difference between former coach Jim Bottomley and Hepditch is that Bottomley lived in Halifax while coaching the Ramblers, but Hepditch will live in Amherst.

“He’s gung-ho to come and live in Amherst,” said Henwood. “His wife is a physiotherapist and she’s going to work here in Amherst, and he’s going to be involved in minor hockey and Amherst kids.”

Henwood also pointed out the savings to be made by having a coach live in Amherst.

The coaching staff's wage this year was $51,540.00, and his coach’s expenses were $20,039.32.

His 2012-2013 wage was $33,700.00, and his expenses were $13,644.97.

“There’s expenses there that you can’t get away from but there are things you can change,” said Henwood. “Our coach’s expenses were up $6,400 but that’s been rectified.

“I hope people realize the moves we made were made for the salvation of this hockey club,” added Henwood. “We want to have a hockey team in Amherst and we can’t spend that kind of money.”

Except for the position of secretary, all executive members were re-elected:

Jim Henwood – president

Keith Blenkhorn – 1st vice-president

Bill Chapman – 2nd vice-president

Linda Duguay – treasurer

Belinda Belliveau – secretary (the previous secretary was Roger Belliveau.

Returning directors include:

Andrew Reid, Sharlene Carter-Earle, Walter Maltby, Billie Chapman, Beth Dobson and Greg Curtis.

    I learned in my many business ventures a very important & simple way to be successful. "Never spend more money than you take in!" It's a bad habit to get into. Seems like Rambler management have this bad habit. Need to change or lock the door.

    How about for pre season game have the Rams Make a bet with a QJMHL team that they could beat them in a game, and on Off Days in the season have the Players out in the community ,calling Bingo , Going on the radio ,, just market the heck out of the team , Spend money to make money .

    Didn't they have to buy Jims contract out? Would that not increase the cost for the season. Just a guess but I would think there is some protection there when a contract is broken.

    I agree with Amherstonian you have to lower ticket prices and then families could attend the games.

    If you think for one minute....that having a coach "being more involved in the community" will put more fans in the seats...you'd better start another toonie draw...I guess one good thing about having the coach in town...he'll be able to babysit...maybe???

    I've been a big hockey fan for years, and try to support the Rams as much as possible, however with a family of five, it is VERY expensive to attend the games. I think that if the ticket prices were to drop by even $1-$2, you would see an additional increase of traffic through the doors. Here's to wishful thinking....
